I.sz. 4. század, Egyiptom, a Római Birodalom uralma alatt. Alexandria utcáin vallási indíttatású erőszakos zavargások törnek ki, melyek a híres Könyvtárat, az akkori világ szellemi központját fenyegetik. A Könyvtárban rekedt briliáns asztronómus, Hypatia és tanítványai harcba szállnak, hogy megmentsék az ősi világ bölcsességét. Közülük ketten a nő szívéért is versengenek: az okos, kiváltságos helyzetű Orestes, és Davus, Hypatia ifjú rabszolgája, akinek döntenie kell úrnője iránt érzett titkos szerelme és a szabadság között, mely az övé lehet, hogy csatlakozik a keresztények megállíthatatlan rohamához.
