A 14 éves Darren olyan, mint a legtöbb környékbéli srác a kertvárosban. A legjobb barátjával lóg, tűrhető jegyeket hoz a suliból, és általában kerüli a bajt. Ám amikor ráakadnak egy utazó cirkuszra, Darrenben megváltozik valami. Pontosan ez az a pillanat, amikor egy Lartan Crepsley nevű vámpír, vérszomjassá változtatja.

Az újdonsült élőholt beáll a Rémségek Cirkuszába, az utazó vurstliba, amelyet olyan szörnyű lények töltenek meg, mint a kígyófiú, a farkasember, a szakállas nő vagy a gigantikus kikiáltó. Amint Darren újonnan kapott erejét próbálgatja ebben a sötét világban, értékes közkatonává válik a vámpírok és halálos ellenfeleik között folyó harcban. Arthur már nagy izgalommal várja a nagy nap éjszakáját, mikor utoljára visszatérhet a villangók országába, hogy találkozzon Holdviola hercegnővel. De Arthur édesapja mit sem törődve ezzel, előbb szeretne hazautazni. Mikor már épp indulnának egy pók Arthur kezébe tesz egy rizsszemet, melybe S.O.S. jeleket karcoltak.
