A Grace család - Jared, és ikerbátyja, Simon, nővérük, Mallory és édesanyjuk - New Yorkból egy elhagyatott, régi házba költöznek, mely déd-nagybátyjuké, Athur Spiderwické volt és amely egy erdőben áll. Hamarosan fura dolgok kezdenek történni az ódon lakban. Mivel a napi rendszerességgel előforduló rejtélyes eltűnésekre és balesetekre a család nem talál magyarázatot, Jaredet kezdik gyanúsítani. Ám amikor a gyerekek nyomozni kezdenek, fény derül a fantasztikus igazságra a Spiderwick birtokkal és az itt lakó lényekkel kapcsolatban.
