Dave Ming Chang (Eddie Murphy), aki nemrégiben érkezett New Yorkba, kissé olyan, mint egy üres medencében úszó ember. Valami ugyanis nagyon nincsen rendben vele. Azoknak, akik először látják, rögtön szembeötlik, hogy nem százas ez a figura és hogy a testében sincs igazán otthon. E feltűnő jellemvonásnak persze nyomós oka van, hiszen "Dave" nem egy ember, hanem egy olyan hajó, melyet a legénységét irányító miniatűr kapitány arcmására formáltak.
