Annie, friss főiskolai diplomájával a kezében nehezen tudja eldönteni, hogy anyja álmait valósítsa meg, vagy saját vágyait követve továbbtanuljon. A sors egy váratlan megoldást kínál a döntés elhalasztására: a lány megismerkedik egy, a New York-i felső tízezerhez tartozó családdal. A következő pillanatban már egy ötéves, kisfiúnak látszó ördögfióka nevelőnője, aki mindent elkövet, hogy megnehezítse Annie dolgát. A hétköznapi élethez szokott lány csak kapkodja a fejét a manhattani elit szokásait és értékrendjét figyelve. Értetlenül áll a gyermekeiket idegenekre bízó, idejüket és millióikat vásárlásra és utazásra költő nők életstílusa előtt. Telnek a hetek, és Annie sok mindenre rájön. Például arra, hogy a kisfiú igazából imádnivaló; a munkaadói a csillogó látszat ellenére nem is annyira boldogok és arra is, hogy a szomszéd egyetemista a legjóképűbb férfi Manhattanben. Kár, hogy a bébiszittereknek tilos a randizás.
