Beowulf minden harcos közül a legerősebb, a leghatalmasabb és a legvakmerőbb. Hírét veszi, hogy a gonosz Grendel megtámadta a dánok ősi szentélyét, és lemészárolta az ott élőket. Hrotgar király jutalmat ígér annak, aki legyőzi a fenevadat. A dicsőségre éhes harcos elvállalja a megbízást, hogy leszámol az emberevő óriással. Rajta kívül nincs emberfia, aki szembe merne szállni a vérszomjas szörnyeteggel. Ám az igazi megpróbáltatás csak ezután következik. A kegyetlen Grendel legyőzése után annak csábító, démoni erővel bíró anyjával is meg kell küzdenie.
